So far this year I have managed to complete only two bike rides, this is despite attempting more than double that number. The fact that it’s such a low number may indicate that things are quite normal (I’d normally be a significant way into double figures by now). All of these have been attempts to commute; I haven’t even dared try anything more advanced yet.
The bottom bracket (the frame itself) failed on my second ride, necessitating a five mile trudge home. On my fourth ride on a newly built bike the left hand crank arm came off as a last teething itch of the first problem. A month separated these two rides as I bought and then rebuilt the bike.
Yesterday my chain broke (catapulting me into a large muddy puddle) less than half a mile from home. I picked the bike up and walked home, had a shower once I got there as I was covered head to foot in mud and then got in the car. I now need to get a new chain (and hopefully not a new cassette as well).
Someday this year I will have a day of uneventful riding, I haven’t managed one so far.
